My dog is not himself. He just started shaking his head back

Customer Question

My dog is not himself. He just started shaking his head back and forth and is not responsive to my commands. Not sure what is going on with him.

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. His unresponsiveness and head shaking suggest encephalopathy (brain disorder). Are you seeing an episodic (several minute duration) head tremor that is a high-frequency "yes" or "no" movement? If so, this a postural repetitive myoclonus (tremor). Tremors can result from intoxications, drug administrations, infections, metabolic diseases, or be idiopathic (unknown cause).
A complete physical and neurologic exam is indicated including a complete blood count, biochemistries, and urinalysis to assess for metabolic etiologies. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
