Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.
She may have ingested the placentas. If this is the case, we can see some black discoloration to the stool as there is a lot of blood in the placentas and digested blood looks black. If she did not eat the placentas, then I would be more concerned.
Either way, I would get a post-natal exam within 2-3 days of whelping. This is to make sure there are no retained puppies, no retained placentas and to make sure mom is recovering normally.
I would continue to offer puppy food, canned food, chicken and water. It's not too uncommon to have a decreased appetite right after whelping. That should not last more than 24-48 hours. They should get the appetite back within that period.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
