I think my little 8 yr old Yorker has a collapsed trachea off

Customer Question

I think my little 8 yr old Yorker has a collapsed trachea off and on, especially when stressed. The vet has said it was reverse sneezing but she is getting worse and more often. Should she be put on medication for this?

Hi, I can help you with your question today.
From your description, I agree that there is concern for collapsing trachea. Unfortunately, there is not specific test that can diagnose this condition. X-ray can be helpful, but we do not always see evidence of collapse on the radiograph.
Still, I do recommend having an x-ray done to confirm there is no other problem such as primary lung disease, heart disease, etc. If we still maintain suspicion of tracheal collapse, I recommend using a cough suppressant. The best one in most cases is hydrocodone.
In the meantime, we can use an over the counter human cough suppressant. Post back with her weight and I can help you with appropriate dosing.
