My 13 year old bulldog has hemangiosarcoma and had a tumor

Customer Question

My 13 year old bulldog has hemangiosarcoma and had a tumor removed from his genital area. He has been non-symptomatic since on daily prednisone. He has been hyperventilating all day and the usual Pet-Ease product that he gets for storms does nothing. I have Deramaxx and Gabapentin left over from our shepherd who has occasional pain issues. Would either or those work in combination with the prednisone to relax him until I can get my usual vet on M? Beer?

This is a scam. I have one question period. The dog is going to die soon and I have a vet we love. I was willing to pay $19 for an answer but this is not right.

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You mustn't administer a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug such as Deramaxx when a corticosteroid such as prednisone is on board. You would need to stop administering the prednisone for at least 24 hours before initiating the Deramaxx. Gabapentin is more useful in combination with either prednisone or Deramaxx than when given as a sole agent.
I dose deracoxib (Deramaxx) at 0.5-1 mg/lb once daily. I dose gabapentin at 2.5-5 mg/lb twice daily when prescribed as an adjunctive analgesic with another drug. Always start at the lowest dose range. You can always increase the dose if necessary.
Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
