Dr. Salkin, our little 5 pound rescue chihuahua (1 1/2 years

Customer Question

Hi Dr. Salkin, our little 5 pound rescue chihuahua (1 1/2 years old) was born blind in one eye, our vet said that it never developed and mentioned that UC Davis has a great veterinarian ophthalmology dept as we asked if the eye can be removed. I need to get over my fear of having her being put under anesthesia. Could you give me an approx. idea of how long a surgery like that takes? Thank you kindly, Linda

Linda, a talented surgeon such as will be found at UC Davis can perform an enucleation in as little as 20 minutes. Having a specialist anesthesiologist attend to your little Chihuahua is an added benefit to having the surgery done there. Please note that we perform surgery on 5 pound cats regularly and so she's not at any more risk than those other small pets! Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
