My dog has been on Buspar for anxiety and aggression. This is the third drug we have tried and it seems to have made her more excitable. So we are now switching to Prozac. Our vet wants us to wean her off the buspar, which we're doing. Is it safe to start the Prozac while we are still weaning her? We're also using a calming collar.

Dr. Drew :

Hello, thanks for your question today! I am Dr. Drew, and I am a licensed veterinarian. I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

Dr. Drew :

It should be safe to start the Prozac while tapering down the Buspar.

Dr. Drew :

these drugs can be used together in some cases,

Dr. Drew :

with no significant risk of problems.

Dr. Drew :

so I'd not expect any problem with using both drugs together during the taper-down period.

Dr. Drew :

Prozac can cause some decrease in appetite in the first week or so, but that typically is temporary and will resolve without treatment.
