My shih tzu is constipated and suffering. She hasnt gone

Resolved Question:

My shih tzu is constipated and suffering. She hasn't gone poo in two days. What can I give her? Will a small portion of a glycerin suppository help?

I would not use a suppository in her. We don't really use these in dogs.

When we want to stimulate colon motility, we'll often give fiber supplements to get the colon moving. To do this, you can use Metamucil (orange cream) or even canned pumpkin. You can give a dog this size 1-2 teaspoons 2-4 times daily of either.

If no improvement, or if straining and no production then I would get her seen. The main thing to look for then is hard stool that will not pass on it's own or even a mass in the rectum/ colon. If it's just hard stool, we'll usually sedate, give an enema and then manually remove the stool.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
