Customer Question
much more attached to me...
My yorkie is panting, drinking water often, urinating more, much more attached to me, she is also digging in her bed as if to get comfortable. She was lactating the past two weeks and I had to help her express her milk. This has happened once before. She seemed ok untill friday night her behavior has changed. Could this be because of her lactating? Her milk supply seems gone now. Her appatite has decreased when she began lactating and has lost weight, she is approximately 6 lbs. now

Dr. B :

Hi Lori,

Dr. B :

Your Yorkie could have an infection in her uterus called a pyometra. You should take her to see your veterinarian asap for an exam.

Customer:

It is 2:45 am, can it wait till 8:00 am when my vet opens, or should I take her to emergency? (which can be very expensive)She's been biting at her nipples so I expessed her but very little milk came out. What is Pyometra? Can that be fatal?

Customer:

I just looked up pyometra, my yorkie will be 3 years in April, she doesn't seem to meet the age criteria, or can this happen in young yorkies too? Please respond

Customer:

Dr. B, please re-send answer. The data never loaded so I'm not able to see answer. I'm signed up for unlimted questions

Customer:

Hello still waiting for a response, wow! this is frustrating...your response wont go through, its says data loading, please wait, i've waited 10 minutes

Customer:

I guess I'm not going to get a response. Thought when I signed up for unlimited (chat/ questions) I would actually be able to chat with someone sooner then 40 minutes..??

Hi, I am happy to answer any question about your dog's veterinary issues.

Sorry you had so much trouble with your post.

It is possible that you yorkie has a false pregnancy. There are medications that can help with this. It is due to a hormonal issue and will usually happen 2 months after each heat with symptoms becoming more severe each time.

If you plan to breed your dog, I would do so next heat cycle. If you are not, I recommend her being spayed after she is cleared for other causes of her symptoms such as diabetes, Cushing's, kidney disease and pyometra. I agree with you that her young age does not fit with these conditions but always a good idea to rule them out with blood work.

Let me know if you have further questions. I will be happy to answer them.

Kind regards, vetmom
