Dr. K :

Hello,

Dr. K :

For how long has your Sheltie had this chronic cough?

Dr. K :

Is she on a monthly heartworm preventative? If so, which one? When was it last given?

Customer:

cough has been a while a few months not bad at first , but more often now heartguard and last month

Dr. K :

There are many reasons why a dog of this age would have a chronic hacking cough like this.

Dr. K :

The list include things like:

Customer:

My friend has a dog with a similar cough and had to a vet who said that dog had asthma ?? it has been very rainy wet and damp here in central PA

Dr. K :

Heartworm disease (which would be unlikely since your dog is on Heartgard)

Dr. K :

Congestive heart failure

Dr. K :

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Dr. K :

Lung parasites

Dr. K :

And others....

Customer:

could there be a over the counter remedy to try ??

Dr. K :

In order to determine which one it is...some tests would need to be run.

Dr. K :

Unfortunately, no.

Dr. K :

There really aren't any OTC medications for any of these problems that can be used in dogs safely.

Customer:

I didn't think I could give things like benedryl

Dr. K :

Also..without knowing what is causing the coughing, using the wrong medication could have negative consequences.

Dr. K :

No, I would not give your dog Benadryl.

Dr. K :

Really...Savannah needs veterinary attention to determine why this coughing is continuing.

Customer:

very true , so a xray would be required most likely

Dr. K :

As I mentioned above, all of these things would need different treatments.

Dr. K :

Yes...some blood tests and an X-ray of the lungs.

Dr. K :

If money is an issue, there are many organizations that exist to help with this...

Dr. K :

If you would like, I can list them here for you.

Customer:

well I am just soo broke I am grasping for help will need to search for some free vet clinic

Customer:

yes plz

Customer:

is getting more fluids into her good or NO

Dr. K :

Drinking water is always good. I would not restrict her water intake. But you should not give any supplemental subcutaneous fluids...if that is what you mean....

Dr. K :

If she has heart failure, excessive fluids could cause more of a problem.

Customer:

okies thank you will look into the mentioned orgs. and seek treatment

Dr. K :

You are very welcome. :)
