My dog has yellow/ green pus in her eye. What could it be

My dog has yellow/ green pus in her eye. What could it be?

Dr. Matt :

Hello - I am Dr. Matt - Is Lizzie squinting her eye?

Customer:

A little bit. Hi

Dr. Matt :

Is her eye red and irritated looking?

Customer:

She also is having problems with her ear. A vet told me last night it was probably a yeast infection. Not red.

Customer:

She plays with her actual brother. Thought she might have scratched her eye.

Dr. Matt :

The ear problem could be a yeast infection. Her eye sounds like she has a bacterial infection called conjunctivitis very similar to pink eye in people yet not contagious. She could have scratched her eye though. A corneal ulcer or scratch to the clear part of the eye could cause similar symptoms. Either way my best recommendation would be to take her to a vet to have her eye looked at. She may only need to be started on antibiotic drops, but I would not let her eye remain infected very long.

Dr. Matt :

Are you able to take her in today?

Customer:

Our area vets would charge a fortune.

Customer:

Probably not.

Customer:

Can I use people drops for conjuctivitis on her.

Customer:

That I have.

Dr. Matt :

What type of drops do you have?

Customer:

Think they are cefzil

Dr. Matt :

Do you have the bottle available to look at? I am not familiar with those drops.

Customer:

No, they are at other house. I was given them last time I had pink eye.

Dr. Matt :

Ok - Cefzil is an antibiotic called a cephalosporin which is generally safe in dogs. Without having examined Lizzie's eyes, I am not allowed to tell you to use this medication. I do not believe it will be harmful, but I cannot tell you to use it. Hope you understand what I mean. :) You can use a sterile over the counter normal saline to help rinse out her eyes though very safely.

Customer:

Thank you so much!
