Hi, Our lab has stage 2-3...
Hi,
Our lab has stage 2-3 hemangiosarcoma and is receiving chemotherapy every three weeks. She has been doing very well but has developed an occasional problem with vomiting first thing in the morning. It is frothy, yellow, slimy and small in volume. This morning she vomited four times a minute or so apart. I have been giving her Pepcid 20mg after breakfast and before bed. I know the caner and the chemo can cause stomach discomfort that is ongoing. My question is should I switch her over to Prilosec which my vet also recommended? The Pepcid seemed to work for the last week or so, but then we had this episode this morning. If I give her Prilosec, can I or does it make sense to give it to her at night instead of before breakfast as the package indicates? Also since I know it can take up to four days for the Prilosec to take effect so is it safe or smart to continue with the Pecid until four days on the Prilosec have passed? Is it safe to give her the Prilosec in the am and then a Pepcid before bed? She goes for her next chemo treatment Thursday, so I want to get this under control prior. We do give her a snack probably 2 hours before bed. Should I give her something right before bed? If so should it contain protein, fat, fiber or some combination? I can tell when she is having tummy trouble now because she will be restless during the night. And I didn't realize it in time this morning, but once we got some cookies and Pepcid in her tummy she was fine. Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Yes, It is safe to continue with the pepcid while starting the prilosic. The pepcid is usually given three times daily with meals.

I think a before bed snack is in order. Probably something high in fiber would be good as that would keep blood sugar levels steady over night and be in her stomach longer.

Hi again. Wanted to revise my pepcid comment. Two times a day is best and the dose is 1mg/kg body weight. Oddly enough over dosing causes vomiting! And yes, it may well be worthwhile to go to Prilosec and you could give it at night with her last snack.
