Customer Question
I have a yellow lab...
I have a yellow lab who will be eight on July 30. In March of this year he was diagnoised with dilated cardiomyopathy. His heart was 4 ribs instead of 3. He was put on vetmedin and enalapril. He responded well to this.... for about a month. His liver was also enlarged. May I took him back for a check up, his heart went to 5. They added salix and also denamarin. The denamarin was only for 15-20 days. He is coughing alot now, and I went back to my vet, they do not want to change any of his meds. They told me in March 6 months to live. Could be couple of years depending on how he reacts to meds. I truly dont think he will make it to his 8th birthday. He is coughing alot now. I am tryi8ng to prepare myself, but I cant. What do you think

Hello,

I am sorry to hear of Maxwell's condition but it sounds like he is in good hands and has a very caring and conscientious owner taking care of him. Unfortunately, this is a disease that does progress and the coughing, while most likely indicates that it has, may be from other causes. Dogs with heart disease can also get bronchitis, etc.

Even if the cough is due to his heart disease, often their meds need to be increased, changed or otherwise tweaked to help them. DIfferent cardiac drugs can be added as well as other diuretics to control fluid build up if that is occurring. Cardiomyopathy is not a good disease, but I wouldn't give up hope just yet that he may still have some good quality of life left with maybe a little adjustment of his meds. Depending on what your vet offers, it may be worthwhile to consult with a veterinary cardiologist as well. Nobody can cure the disease, but they may be able to offer alternative suggestions to keep him around a little longer.

Good luck with him and please let me know if you have any further questions.
