i want to know what creatine and bun levels constitute putting the dog down
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

Both, BUN & Creatinine are byproducts of the body metabolism of protein and muscle. Every animal and human produce these two byproducts everyday of their life. Once they are produced the body gets rid of it via kidneys. Normal functioning kidneys will always maintain their levels low. When we see elevation of both of these byproducts it is an indication of kidney trouble. Then, we try to help the kidneys by giving fluid and medication, but, if the kidney's are not able to get rid of these byproduct because of whatever disease affecting the kidney's then the dog is in what we call "Renal (kidney) Failure" and will become toxic and eventually die. We recommend putting the dog to sleep so he/she does not go through the discomfort of being in kidney failure.

If you have additional questions I will be glad to answer them.

myvet was not overly concerned because her clinical presentation is great and levels have been slowly dropping over the last 2 years what other clinical signs indicate discomfort

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Signs of kidney disease would be weight loss, increase water consumption, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. If they go into complete kidney failure and they are in pain they can have an arch back.
