Hi - I just adopted a beautiful new 6 month old little girl from a shelter.
She just ate a big meal and is napping. I noticed that a little red mixed in with her wet nose. Not a bloody nose - but looks like a little blood.... Should I be worred?

Hi, I am Dr. Peter and would like to help.

1- Is the redness coming from inside her nostrils or on the top of her nose?

Inside - Very faint redness with a little wetness from her nose. Not constant at all.
She seems healthy in every way. She ate, she is wagging her tail
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Is the temperature dry where she is at; or was there a dramatic temperature change like hot to cold or vice versa?

We are in Los angeles. She was in a horrible kill shelter - one of the biggest in town. Its warm here, pretty dry - but no big climate shifts. She has a bit of a runny nose, not bad, but when she takes a big deep breath some extra wetness comes out, sometimes with a hint of red
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

What may be happening is that the inside of her nostrils can become very dry in the presence of dry weather. This will cause bursting of small capillaries and cause some bleeding. There are other causes of nasal bleeding but in a puppy they are very rare. Most likely this is related to dry sinuses. What you can do is either apply a drop of sterile or distill water in each nostril. Or, if you take a hot shower bring her in the bathroom with you and allow her to breath the vapor/steam. Both methods will provide moisture and hydration for her sinuses. Problem should be resolved.

If you have additional questions I will be glad to answer them.
