dog: ligament..until saturday..sluggish, wont eat and only drinks…

Customer Question
Our dog had ligament surgery...
Our dog had ligament surgery on Wednesday 6/23/2010. We brought him home on Thursday and all seemed to be progressing until Saturday afternoon. He is now sluggish, won't eat and only drinks when prompted. I am worried. He has a follow-up tomorrow morning, but I am worried and afraid to wait. Am I okay to wait until Monday for his follow-up as long as he is drinking?

Hi there.

Which procedure was done....TPLO, TTA or Extracapsular?

Is Toby on antibiotics and /or anti inflammatory meds?

Do you have a rectal thermometer to take hi temperature for me?

Thanks!

Toby had cruciate surgery on his knee. He is on Simplicet antibiotics, has a Fentanyl patch for pain as well as Tyleno with Codeine taken orally. He is also on the anti-inflammatory Rimadyl and Dasaquin soft chews joint supplement. He takes Thyroxine for thyroid.

I do not have a rectal thermomter - will any rectal thermometer do? I can run to Walgreens and get one.

Tobe's temp is 101.1.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Loretta, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Thanks you so much for going to all this trouble. This temp is normal telling me that he does not have an infection.

I believe that he is suffering from post op pain which often is worse 2-3 days after the procedure. This is not an emergency because I do believe that, even though he is on a major amount of pain killers and anti inflammatory agents, Toby is just very painful and this keeps him from wanting to eat. If he were vomiting or had other digestive disturbances, I would worry that all these pain meds would be causing a stomach issue. Since this is not the case, allow him to recover from this surgery for now. Make sure to give him Pedialyte every 4 hrs to make sure he stays hydrated and also purchase at the pet store a product called Nutrical. This is a high calorie supplement that will give him the nutrients that he needs to heal from this very traumatic procedure.

Like I said before, unless he starts vomiting, then allow him to rest and give him the nutrients. have your vet check him in the morning.

Good Luck!! I sure hope poor Toby will feel better soon!!

let me know if I can help you further....

He has been vomiting. Everytime I coax him to drink, within about 20 minutes he vomits. I know that he needs to keep hydrated and that is why I am coaxing him to drink, but if he vomits it up, isn't that the same as not drinking at all.

He does have a sensitive digestive tract - he is on ZD because he cannot tolerate other foods.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Loretta, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
YIKES!

Now I am worried because he is on a huge amount of drugs that can cause stomach issues. This would concern me and I would suggest that you have him seen by the Er vet. I know this is expensive but if these medications along with the stress of this procedure has caused a stomach ulcer, this could be a very serious side effect and you will want this treated immediately. I do not believe now that the pain of the procedure is causing this as I had said previous...I am afraid that this could be due to the medications.

Do not force water if he throws this up every time.

Take him to the ER vet....they can keep him hydrated with IV fluids and give medications to stop the vomiting.

Hang in there!! Toby will get through this with some help.

I sure hope he is ok!!

Hi -

we just got back from the ER vet. He told us to discontinue the Rimadyl, as it is the likely culprit for stomach upset, as well as the Tylenol and Codiene. We are continuing with the Simplicef antibiotic.

Toby received sub-Q fluids, but we declined the recommended blood tests since we think getting him through today and getting him to his regular vet tomorrow is the best path. If blood tests are recommended then, that's what we will do.

He looks like a Cocker Spaniel-Camel mix with the subQ fluid hump between his shoulders, but at least I won't worry about dehydration the next 18 hours. Thanks for your help.

WHEW!! Thank you so much for letting me know how Toby is doing,. I am very relieved.

I was worried about so many pain relievers which can all have an effect on he digestive tract.

I am sure he will be fine now.

Thanks again and have a great day!
