We have an 8 year...
We have an 8 year old Golden Retriever Female, who started to experience on the top of her back app 2 years ago an oily/greasy hair/coat issue. The vet had conducted a skin scrape which showed mites, which were treated with a horse product which got rid of the mites, but the greasy coat remained.

What can we try??

Hi there.

This oily substance is most likely due to an over production of the sebaceous glands which are glands within the hair follicles. This is called Sebaceous Adenitis and does not have a treatment besides bathing and antibiotics to guard against secondary bacterial infections. I would also recommend something like Vitacoat or Derm Caps that add Omega 3 fatty acids to give moisture to the coat.

As we are in Australia not US how can we access these products, I am presuming that Vitacoat or Derm Caps are a supplement that you add to your dogs food??
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Loretta, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
yes, these are daily supplements and even if you do not have these brand names, you can find something similar to this at the pet store. the important part of this is the Omega 3 fatty acids.

I hope that helps...
