Customer Question
Our little (12lb) Terrier Chihuahua...
Our little (12lb) Terrier Chihuahua suddenly started acting sick. (I have not seen her I am travelling) My wife and daughter tell me that she appeared fine when they got home and walked her, but then very quickly she stopped moving a lot and layed down and wants to sleep. They say she is breathing hard and has a stiff tail and legs. They have her at the vet emergency room now. I am very worried, what could it be? (she loves to eat everything)

Hi I'm Dr. Jen,
I'm sorry to hear that Sandy isn't feeling well.
The symptoms that you are describing could be a lot of different things. Breathing heavily could be from heat exhaustion, respiratory infection, or heart disease.
Lethargy could be from almost any disease including the ones mentioned above.
The stiff tail and legs could be caused by pain, a slipped disc in the spine, tick borne disease, arthritis, an injury or something neurological.
It sounds like she is in the right place. I would ask them what testing they are doing to start narrowing the list of possibilities down.
I hope she feels better soon.
Thanks,
Dr. Jen

Well, they say it might be pancreatitis. Could it be that she ate something she can't pass or that cut or punctured her stomach or intestines? Could it be rat poison?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Jen, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Pancreatitis sounds like a reasonable explanation for the signs you are describing, It can come on suddenly and cause a lot of pain and lethargy. Fluids are the most important part of treatment for this disease so it is very good that they started them right away.
I think that if there were an obstruction or perforation the vet would have seen that on an x-ray and they would be suggesting surgery so that doesn't sound like that is what they are thinking.
