Hi, I am Dr. Peter and would like to help.

1- Is the skin scaling?

2- How long has this been going on?

3- Have you checked for fleas?

4- How is the rest of his coat?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

He has had them for about two days now. I have checked for fleas but there are none. the skin is not scaling they look like red spots with a yellow/ white centre and the rest of his coat is fine.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

The lesions you describe are consistent with what is called "miliary dermatitis." One of the most common cause for this is an allergy reaction to flea bites. Though you are not seeing any fleas, it only takes one flea to bite and cause this reaction. Or, we can sometimes see this with insect bites like ants. I would recommend you put him on a flea prevention program like Frontline as a precaution. Bath him with an antibacterial shampoo (chlorhexiderm) and apply a topical antibiotic like neosporin or bacitracin on the lesion. Make certain he does not lick the are or antibiotic, you may need to put an ecollar (cone) on him. If no improvement in 48 hours after doing the above have him checked by your veterinarian.

If you have additional questions I will be glad to answer them.

thank you. he also has two quite large internal lumps. one on his side between his ribs and pelvic bone and one on the back of his neck where his microchip is

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Peter, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

Those internal lumps will require a visual from your veterinarian. If the vet can not determine on exam what they are, they can do a biopsy or fine needle aspirate.

Your welcome.
