dog: has been foaming and drooling at the mouth..last 3 hours…

Customer Question
My dog has been foaming...
My dog has been foaming and drooling at the mouth like every 15-20 minutes. Maybe 3-4 times in the last 3 hours. When the foaming comes on, her head starts to shake and she looks kinda scared. The only thing is she still has a appetite she just drank a whole lot of water and ate her food earlier maybe a hour ago. Just a few minutes ago a slobber attack came about and got excited and wanted to go outside and started doing what she does when she plays and barks at the dog next door. Is this something seroius? Im really worried. Its 1.30am and Im not sure if I should rush her to the ER or wait it out until the Vet opens in the Morn. PLEASE HELP

Hello,

She may have gotten something in her mouth that tasted bad or was irritating. Some dogs will eat or play with insects and reptiles that can cause this. I would try to rinse her mouth out with water and see if this helps. As long as she is not having any difficulty breathing or looks like she is having a seizure-like episode this can probably waite till your regular vet opens in the morning.

Hope this helps,

DVM Dave
