Customer Question
When I took my Dog...
When I took my Dog in for shots the Vet said something about a Hernia, but he didn't say anything more. Is there something I should get for him? I've heard of a Hernia before but I don't know what it means or if I should worry?

Thanks,
Louise [email protected]

Hi there.

A hernia means that there are abdominal contents have a hole where they can get through to the outside. This often is at the umbilicus which is his belly button. Check this to see if there is a lump in this area. This could also be an inguinal hernia which is a hole that allows abdominal contents to come out through this hole. This could be more serious since the bladder and intestinal loops could become trapped in this area and this will be life threatening if left untreated.

Ask your vet where this hernia is and whether this is serious requiring repair.

Good Luck!!

The vet said that his belly button was an 'outty' when I first got him, but when i tuen him over on his back he also has a lumpy spot below his little rib area...

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Loretta, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
This area by his rib could be a hernia which is a hole in the musculature allowing abdominal contents to come out into the subcutaneous tissue, If it is very large, this should be repaired so that there is not a risk of these contents becoming entrapped in this hole. Your vet can tell you if this is serious or not.

You are very welcome, Louise!

Most likely if your vet thought this hernia was serious, they would have suggested surgery to repair it, Now, Louise, just keep an eye on it to be sure it doesn't get larger.

Have a Great day!!
