Hi, thanks for your question regarding Phoenix. If you look at his gums - are they pink, or pale ? Are they moist or dry?

Pink and pretty dry. I felt with my finger and there was no moisture on finger
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Drew, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Ok, thanks for the reply. That's likely to be a sign of dehydration, which is to be expected in a dog who isn't drinking water very well. It's possible that there's some gastroenteritis going on, which could explain the poor appetite and diarrhea, but in some cases where we see such symptoms, there may be more serious underlying issues, such as organ system diseases (liver or kidney problems), or metabolic diseases such as Diabetes, or even Cancer in some cases. The difficulty with getting up is likely to be associated with this dehydration, and possibly electrolyte imbalances, which often occur hand-in-hand with dehydration.

Because Phoenix's symptoms are somewhat vague, the best option is to have a thorough physical examination performed by a veterinarian today. I would be most interested in palpating his abdomen, and to take an x-ray of his abdomen, in order to look for the possibility of a foreign object that may have been swallowed, or a tumor that might be present on the spleen or other internal organs.

If there is no emergency veterinary care available in your area, you may wish to try to administer water or pedialyte via a syringe, though for a 130 pound dog, it's going to be difficult to make much of an impact if Phoenix is seriously dehydrated.

Thanks for your reply. Phoenix seemed fine yesterday, and I know he drank water yesterday. This seemed to come on suddenly after eating his evening meal, which consisted of his normal diet - 2 cups (+/-) dry dog food, steamed broccoli. The only changes were that cauliflower and carrots were added to the steamed broccoli. He did not play as normal after eating, and the gas was horrible all evening. He is usually very energtic and playful, very loving. He is listless and shows no interest in any of his usual activities. His nose is warm. Last night, his stomach was very bloated and tight, today it is not as bloated.

Thanks for the additional info. Gas can be uncomfortable or even downright painful, just as in humans. Addition of new foods can create some digestive upset for many dogs, and it's possible that's what's going on here, though the reluctance to stand does worry me quite a bit. Anti-gas medicines are sometimes useful, specifically containing Simethicone, at a dose of 50 to 200 mg, every 8 hours as needed. It's possible that may give some comfort to Phoenix, but again, I'm a bit concerned about the symptoms you've described.
