Hello Claire,

It sounds like she may be having a false pregnancy. This is fairly common in dogs and is a pack trait. In dog packs, only the alpha female can have pups and the rest of the pack females have a false pregnancy where they go through uterine development followed by milk production to help care for the pups while the alpha female goes back out to hunt.

We see this not uncommonly in our domestic dogs still. If that is the case here, then the mammary glands will dry up on their own and you shouldn't have any problems.

The hiding and nesting under the deck is likely secondary to the hormone secretion. These will resolve when the false pregnancy resolves. Get her spayed prior to her next heat cycle to prevent this from happening again. An ultrasound would determine if she is pregnant, but at this point you should be able to see abdominal distension if she were.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

i have 2 dogs one jack russel and lilly they are family pets bought to keep one another company we have no other dogs around here were in a remote village, with only cats around ,

Then it's just a false pregnancy if there are no intact males to get her pregnant. If Jack is intact, then he could have got her pregnant. We see false pregnancy a lot in dogs- not a big deal and something that will resolve on it's own. The hiding under the deck is probably her making a nest as her body thinks she's going to have puppies and is telling her brain to prepare.

jack is very much intact and has [produced 3 litters this year already

Then I would get an ultrasound or x-ray to make sure he didn't impregnate Lilly
