maltese: year old female..who weighs about 4 lbs..vomit

Customer Question
I have a 1 year...
I have a 1 year old female maltese who weighs about 4 lbs. Sometimes(usually doesn't happen more than once or twice/month) she makes a strange sound, somewhat like gurgling, as if she could not breathe well or is in discomfort. She archs her back a bit, but does not vomit. She tightens her muscles and then trembles.
At first i thought it was a hypoglycemic attack, since I had a poodle that suffered from those, but now I'm beginning to think it might be acid reflux. Usually, when she has these symptoms, she's been either sleeping, and wakes up in at night with the "attack" or as this morning, she had been licking her limbs incessantly before I got up to give her food.
I feed her royal canine (indoor), twice/day, sometimes 3 times, as she will almost never eat more than 1/8 cup at once. She will typically eat about 1/4 cup to 3/8 cup per day. Only if I mix tiny bits of chicken breast or freeze dried liver with her food, she will eat with enthusiasm. Otherwise she won't eat much.

Good-Morning:

I am Dr. Lisa and I would like to help you with Lou-Lou.

There are many reasons why dogs display the signs you have been describing - but no one specific entity. If she is displaying these many types of signs of discomfort then she really needs to see a vet for an exam and perhaps a diagnostic work-up.

I think that reflux may indeed be part of her problem. Feeding her a small amount frequently is an excellent idea: I do not know whether she is too thin, too fat, or just right because I cannot feel her. In order for you to tell her proper weight, please check out how to figure her BCS (body condition score: http://www.purina.com/dogs/health/BodyCondition.aspx) which will help you decide her future feeding amount. She may not want to eat because she has no need for more food. She may need exercise instead!

Her limb licking may be a neurosis, from pain, or from allergies; again, an exam will be necessary to help figure out the reason.

Please do not give her PeptoBismol as it contains a drug that could exacerbate a bleeding problem (which you do not wany to do with reflux). It would be best to hold off on OTC problems until after a diagnosis.

I hope this helps and answers your question. If you are satisfied with this answer, please press the green ACCEPT icon. If you have more questions about this problem, please press 'reply'. Bonuses and feedback are always appreciated. Thank-you.

Good-Luck,

Dr. Lisa

I will take her to the vet today. Nevertheless, do you think giving her bits of chicken breast mixed in with her food is not recommended? Some vets have told me Not to do it, only dry food is good, others have recommended that it's important that she eats since she had be underweight, so it's ok to give her a little chicken mixed in, as long as it's chicken breast without condiment.
Another thing I was recommended, on the allergies side, was to change from Royal Canine to Eukanuba. Do you think it's worth the try? Should I discontinue the chicken even if she doesn't eat for a couple of days? I'm afraid she's too small to be left "hungry". With the dry food only she practically ignores it. And she doesn't eat the I/D Prescription Diet either. She won't eat canned foods from the vet.

By the way, I'm not clear on what OTC means.

Hello again:

How did your vet visit go?

"OTC" is short for 'over the counter', any product that you can get without a prescription.

If she is underweight, chicken is fine. If you are going to do a food trial because of allergies, you need to pick a food with a new protein source, one that she's never had, like venison. Little girls like your baby should not go 3 days without eating - that is too long as she is too little without the reserves.

Good-Luck,

Dr. Lisa

She's not too thin right now. Her weight is ok, the vet confirmed.
I don't think venison is too easy to find here in Puerto Rico. So that would not be an alternative for me. So you suggest I stop giving her chicken?

I found a food called Sojos http://www.sojos.com/ at the pet store and was thinking of trying to give her the Original Mix or the Grain-Free Mix with chicken. I could also try the Sojos that comes with the Turkey (Complete Mix). I don't think she's had much turkey. Maybe only once. So that could be a complete change for her. But I guess I would have to do it gradually. How long does it typically take for an allergy to go away, for her system to "cleanse"?
Do you know this SOJOS food?, is it a good alternative for complete nutrition?
