Hello there,

How long has this been going on?

Is the sound constant or off and on?

Has the leg been radiographed?

A little over a week, it is constant, no xrays. She still wants to run and play and does not limp and when I manipulate her legs she shows no signs of pain or distress

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Scott, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Clicking in the rear leg usually indicates a meniscus tear inside the knee. They can be minimal enough that they don't cause pain. Flexing and extending the knee joint while the dog is laying down usually causes the sound. The other possibility is the hip joint. A dog this age can have arthritic changes in the hip socket and crepitus and noise can result. If the change has occurred gradually, there may not be a limp. Dogs have a much higher tolerance for pain than we do and handle it much better. If there is no lameness, surgery will not likely be needed. Resting the dog is recommended. If the sound persists, an anti-inflammatory may help. Hip changes can be seen on radiographs, meniscal tears cannot.

I guess we're off to see Dr. Mike. The sound just breaks my heart. But she acts very normal. Still a full of life crazy Boxer.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Scott, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
If she is not limping, there is stability in the leg. Most dogs with a click hold the leg up completely. The problem with meniscus problems is that the tissue has little blood supply and does not always heal with rest. In people they go in arthroscopically and remove the damaged area.
