I have a six yr old black lab who has alway been very high…

Customer Question
I have a six yr...
I have a six yr old black lab who has alway been very high strung, unmanageable sometimes, but always because he wants to play. As he has gotten older he has become progressively more aggressive with other dogs, mainly other male dogs. He is not well socialized because I have such a hard time controlling him when we are out, it has gotten to the point that we no longer go on walks. He does get plenty of excercise on our 1 acre property, so that is not an issue.

Our family went away last weekend overnight and my sister came in to take care of the dog as she has done many times before. He went off his food (not completely) and just kind of moped around. Now two days after our return he is exhibiting some very odd behaviour. He seems to be very restless and unable to settle down unless he is outside. He has found himself a hiding place under some bushes outside and there he stays. It's not even hot out today. Any ideas?

Hello there,

Is he on monthly heartworm prevention?

What color are the gums and insides of the lower eyelids?

Were you able to get a rectal temp on him with a thermometer?

Is there any abdominal distension?

Is there any vomiting or diarrhea?

Is he drinking normal amounts of water?

No, to the heartworm question.

Normal, to the colour question

No way I could get that, to the temperature question.

No, to abdomen question.

No, to vomiting or diarrhea.

No, he seems to be more thirsty than usual and is panting more than usual.

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Scott, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Without a rectal temp it s impossible to rule out fever. Increased thirst, loss of appetite and panting can be signs of many things in a dog this age. Kidney problems, toxin, ingestion, fever, infection, thyroid problems, diabetes, adrenal gland disorders and cancer are all possible. If there is no vomiting and diarrhea, there should not be any stomach upset. If the symptoms continue blood and urine tests are needed to rule out all the possible causes. Arthritic pain with cause restlessness and panting, but will not cause increased thirst. Heartworm infection can cause the signs, but a cough an abdominal distension also occur as well. The only thing to try at home is buffered aspirin at 5 mg per pound body weight every 12-24 hours as needed to rule out a fever. It must be given with food.
