I noticed that my 10 year old female pit was drooling at the right side of her mouth. The right side of her mouth is a little swollen and drooping. I thought maybe she got bit by something or maybe had a stroke. What could it be?

Hello and thank you for your question.

Your Sarah may be having a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to bee stings or spider bites occur with some frequency. The other possibility is a snake bite. Any snakes in your area?

I would check her mouth carefully for any stinger. Pay particular attention to the lips, tongue and gums. ONLY do this if she will cooperate. It is not worth getting bitten.

An antihistamine such as Benadryl may help. You may have this in your medicine cabinet or can purchase over-the-counter. If you reply with her approximate weight, I can help you with a dose.

Is she otherwise acting alright? With allergic reactions, monitor closely for progressive facial swelling, swelling around the throat, severely decreased activity or vomiting.

Hope this helps. Reply back with any further questions.

Sarah weighs approximately 90 - 100 pounds. Her appetite is good, she still ants to go for walks, no vomiting. I will check inside her mouth when I get home.

Benadryl (generic: Diphendyramine) dose for dogs is 1 mg/ lb. So, for a 90-100 lb dog, dose is a whopping 100 mg (4 tablets). The standard tablet of Benadryl contains 25 mg.

This is a much higher dose than for humans due to the differance in dog metabolism. I would recomend starting with 2.5 to 3 tablets. Most common side effect is sedation.

Benadryl can be dosed 2 to 3 times a day. If the swelling/ drooling persists more than 8 hours or there are any other signs that concern you, please seek veterinary attention.

Hope this helps.
