We live in central Louisiana...Last Wednesday PM our female 4 year old rott went outside to do her business, shortly after going out we heard her yelp, as we were on our way out to see what was going on she was on her way in the house, She did not seem to have control of her front legs. Our first thought was that she had been bitten by a snake. We could not find any bite marks. Having no emergency vet services in our rural area we had to wait until morning to take her to the vet and by that time she had lost the use of not just her front legs but her back legs also. After multiple tests and x-rays the vet could not find out what was wrong with her. The vet gave her a cortisone injection by IV, said her blood work was good and could not find anything on her x-rays. He sent her home and said if she was not better in a few days, we might have to take her to LSU Vet center. I called him on Friday..no improvement. He gave an RX for Predniosne 20mg and Tramadol 50 mg. Sunday and sti

Hi JACustomer,
I am so sorry to hear about to hear about your dog. It must be terrible to see her like this.

The most likely cause of such a sudden loss of function in her legs is a lesion in the spinal cord in her neck. It could be a blood clot, a disc, or a condition called Wobbler's ( or cervical instability). You can't see any of these on an Xray (sometimes you can see a Wobbler on an Xray, but it is very easy to miss it); you really need an MRI or CT.

I think time is important here; if there is any chance of her walking again I would get her to LSU as soon as you can. She needs to be evaluated by a veterinary neurologist as soon as possible. I would continue the Pred. and the Tramadol until you can get there.

Turning her (gently; I am sure you are doing this) is a great idea. Keep her as comfortable as you can, and get to LSU today if you can. They should have an emergency service that can admit you even on a Sunday.

I wish you luck with her. Rebecca
