mixed breed: about 2 yrs old..couch, he yelped a little..seemed fine…

Customer Question
I have a 13# XXXXX...
I have a 13# XXXXX dog, who is a mixed breed, that is about 2 yrs old. This evening, when i went to pick him up from next to me on the couch, he yelped a little, but seemed fine otherwise. It happened a second time a while later so i proceede to investigate. I worked for a local vet for several years while in college. He seems to be slightly limping on his back legs so while he was lying down i visually inspeced both of them, including paws (pads and in between), did range of motion tests on both, felt from hip to paw, etc.... with no negative response. to go up / down stairs, he hesitates...???? we did go to the dog park for about an hour this afternoon, any chance he strained a muscle while running??

Hi there

He may have over done it at the park-he could have pulled amuscle in his back. I'm sure you know he should be examined by a vet-the sooner the better-In the meantime you can try giving buffered aspirin 325mg- give 1/6 tablet by mouth-you can repeat that dose in 12 hours. Keep him rested-no jumping on /off things. Dr. Jenn

since asking the above mentioned, we went for a walk, and he seems to be favoring the left leg..??? He only "lifted his leg," midway thru urinating, out of about four stops, which is unusual for him. Also seems less energetic. But, hoping that is from the exertion at the dog park. we were only there about an hour, since it was our first time. But i didn't ever see him running extensively ?

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Jenn, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
He could have just turned his leg the wrong way and pulled something-a soft tissue injury like a muscle, we also have to worry about the ligaments in his knee.

so the overall "change" in his behavior ??? possibly due to the potential injury??

Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Jenn, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
absolutely-if he is hurting he will act off, more quiet , he may even have a decreased appetite. If he is not improving he may need an x ray done.
