Customer Question
I have an 11 year...
I have an 11 year old Golden Retriever Mix. She is normally very healhty and active. In the last 2 days she has had a warm feeling beyond normal that reacts to aspirin so I believe it to be a fever. She is lethargic, will not eat. Otherwise she is making water and defecating.

Hello there,

What color are the gums and insides of the lower eyelids?

Is she drinking?

Have you found any ticks on the dog lately?

Her gums are pink and return to pink after being pressed. Lower eyelids are pink. She is drinking. She is and has been on Frontline. She walks with our other 3 dogs in the woods daily with us and it does have ticks but I dont notice any on her and even so I surmise the Frontline would kill them if they bit her. She and the others routinely drink out of the pond. the other dogs are fine. Normally she is a very healthly dog so this is unusual for her. She is due for Frontline again on june 17th

In a dog this age fever and loss of appetite can be caused by several things. Liver and kidney problems would be the main concern. Some type of cancer would be next. Heart disease is also common in older dogs, but they usually have a cough. Infection is certainly possible, but uncommon in vaccinated dogs with no history of wounds or tick bites. If the aspirin does not resolve the problem, blood tests and radiographs are needed to get a specific diagnosis and treatment plan. The symptoms the dog has are common in a great many illnesses older dogs. It may be something as simple as a fever or there could be a very serious underlying cause. Fever in dogs almost always has some type of underlying cause.
