Hello,

You can try giving her small amount of Pedialyte multiple times a day to help maintain her hydration. You can also try OTC peptobismol ~ 2 table spoons 2 times a day to help with vomiting and diarrhea.

Hope that helps,

no anti-biotics? just the fluids?
Dog Veterinarian: DVM Dave, Veterinarian replied 8 years ago
Antibiotics would be helpfull, but are not OTC and require a prescription.

Hi,
Dogs that contract parvovirus tend to lose so much fluid through the vomiting and diarrhea that they dehydrate and die. Treatment consists of trying to maintain hydration. Antibiotics are helpful for treating the secondary infections that they may get, but not the parvo itself because it is a virus and doesn't respond to antibiotics. To attempt to keep her hydrated at home, the biggest issue is getting the vomiting under control. An anti-emetic would be very helpful. Depending on your finances, having your vet give a shot of Cerenia would be the best course of action. There aren't really any great oral anti-emetics and since she's vomiting, pills won't stay down and do any good anyway. If you can get a shot of Cerenia to stop the vomiting, then give small amounts of pedilyte or an electrolye solution to try and keep her hydrated while her body is fighting the virus. The other option on hydration is to see if your vet will sell you bags of IV fluids and teach you how to give subcutaneous fluids at home. This is relatively easy to inject the fluids under the skin and have her absorb them over time. If she stops vomiting for 24 hours, then you can offer a bland diet like boiled hamburger or chicken and rice in small amounts (to see if she keeps it down). This is the best advice I can give for home treatment. Hydration is the difference between a positive outcome and a negative one.
