Hi there and welcome to Just Answer!

Vomiting can be caused by something as simple as stomach irritation (gastritis), infection (bacterial, viral) or more serious conditions such as toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, foreign body obstruction, metabolic diseases (ie liver or kidney disease) and even cancer.

There are a few things you can try at home for vomiting that may help:

  1. Withhold food and water for 12-24 hours - this gives the stomach and intestinal tract time to rest
  2. Bland diet - this can be made a home (ie 1 part boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with 3 parts white rice/pasta) or can be purchased through your veterinarian (ie Hill's i/d). I would try feeding this diet for the 3-5 days and if she does well, you can gradually wean her back to her normal diet.
  3. Famotidine (aka pepcid AC) - this medication is an over the counter antacid which can help settle your dogs stomach. 10 mg every 12 hours would probably be an appropriate dose but if you let me know how much she weighs, I can confirm.

You can also talk to your veterinarian about getting additional medication for vomiting:

  1. Fluids - may help if she is dehydrated and can be given quickly underneath the skin (subcutaneous)
  2. Cerenia - not sure if this is available in the UK but this is a new antinausea medication available in injectable or oral forms. If it VERY effective an if your dog vomits through this medication, she definitely has something serious going on.
  3. Antibiotics may also be necessary if your vet suspects she has an infection.

If further testing is required, your best bet would be to start with xrays and bloodwork. If that doesn't show anything, the next step is to have an abdominal ultrasound performed by a specialist (radiologist). This will allow us to know what (if anything) is wrong with the liver and if there are any intestinal problems (obstruction, cancer, inflammation, etc). At our clinic, it costs about $300 but is well worth it since it gives us a ton of information.

I hope this information helps - let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!
