Hello and thank you for submitting your question to Just Answer.

This is VERY common in young puppies such as yours. Please keep in mind that she was just taken from her litter and mom, where she was used to having other playmates around 24 hours a day. Unfortunately there is not much you can do besides get through it. The best way to do this is to ignore her when she barks. Yes, it is hard. That's why people compare getting a new puppy with having a new baby, it's a lot of hard work and sleepless nights. When she barks, if you go to comfort her or give her food or attention, she is learning that barking = attention. Every time you go to her when she barks, you are reinforcing that bad behavior. You need to ignore her. Now, I say that, however, you need to make sure (before you ignore her) that she doesn't have to go to the bathroom, she isn't hungry or soiled and has access to water. If you truly think she is barking only when she wants attention, then leave her be. A puppy that age should be taken outside to go to the bathroom every 2 hours. Be sure that if you have her on the balcony that it is not too hot or too cold for her.

I hope this helps! Good luck with her. Don't get frustrated or angry at her, remember she is a puppy and it is a long road.

Take care and Happy Holidays,
Dr. Spencer
