Dogs and cats are recommended to be fasted 12 hours before surgery. This is because the anesthetic used can cause a nauseous feeling and can even cause an upset stomach. If food is in the stomach and they vomit, they run a higher risk of aspirating food into their lungs, which can lead to pneumonia, or worst case scenario, choking on the food and dying!
