I have a 2006...

I have a 2006 dodge ram 3500 5.9l diesel. I was driving and noticed a knock. Injector solenoid was bad, changed that. Still has knock. Real loud when I first start it but then it goes away completely and then comes back. On acceleration it doesn't knock, but decelerate I have a rattling knock. Sounds like its coming from bell housing. I got a code reading $07e8 CAN STD TO FAST and $10 SAE, No engine light is on, and no other codes. Not sure what to do next?

Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?

I've been trying to figure this for a long time. I thought it was the flywheel but noticeable damage. you can hear it all over. loudest underneath. no smoke, no blow by, no engine lights, rpm fluctuates to almost nothing.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Ram yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes, Ive tried everything I can think of, ran scans can't figure it out.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Have do done injector tests with wire disabling.

Do you have an infra red temp gun, or can get one somewhere?

I have one

OK I'd be curious to know the temps of each of the exhaust runners. Get the engine hot and check the temps on the manifold for each cylinder........as close to the head as you can.

I don't know if I want it to run that long as to warm up I will try it as long as I can don't want anymore damage that may be alot worse
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
On top of head flat spot where the exaust bolts #1-6 119 123 125 125 129 120 startup was around 58 outside temp
Dodge Mechanic: Mopar Certified, Dodge Technician replied 3 months ago

Ok, that's good. That means the cylinders are basically putting out the same power as each other.

So, if you have a noticeable knock then you're likely looking at a mechanical issue and not a fuel related issue since the cylinder temps are pretty equal.

When one injector goes bad, #5 in your case, it can actually cause some piston damage so I have a feeling you might be looking at that possibility. One way to check would be to remove the injectors and use a boroscope camera down the hole to have a look at the pistons.

Hope that helps......

I have tried that can again I can try again i couldn't see anything different then the rest if the sylanoid went bad that would kill the injector no fuel to that cylander
Dodge Mechanic: Mopar Certified, Dodge Technician replied 3 months ago

It doesn't necessarily mean NO fuel, you may have been getting some fuel which equates to a lean running cylinder and this is what can cause piston damage.
