Heater fan works, engine...

Heater fan works, engine temp normal, heater blows cold air - suspect valve that sends hot water into heater core. where is this valve located and how hard is it to replace? it will work occasionally but usually blows cold air - by occasionally, i mean after we were driving for about an hour, it started blowing hot air normally and kept it up until we finished our trip ( about 30 minutes). i have tried manulipating the temp bars and turning the system off and on with no result. the fuse is good or it would not operate sporatically. am at an impasse as what to do. please advise..............

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked to make sure the thermostat is working? What about the coolant level?

Coolant level is good, thermostat apparently okay as the engine is running at a normal operating level.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car?

2002 dodge grand caravan

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Grand Caravan yourself? What have you tried so far?

Have looked for the valve that puts the hot water into the heating system - must be inside the vehicle body as am unable to locate. have had a lot of experience with older vehicles but am 80 years old and not familiar with the newer stuff.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

No, except that the cooling system has been kept in top shape, flushed and new anti-freeze put in several times. the thermostat has been replaced at least once, new radiator hoses installed at least once, and we have had no problems for almost 200k miles. i am sorta a maintainance freak - oil changes every 2500 miles and such. the coolant is clean with no discoloration or signs of distress. his is my first time to have this sort of trouble - ever............
