Just replaced a faulty...

Just replaced a faulty torque converter, changed fluid, adjusted bands. Worked fine on test drives, but now lost 3rd gear and then 2nd. May be slightly over filled. Would that cause issue?

2002 1500 slt 5.9L. 46re transmission.

Yes. I replaced the converter due to mechanical noise indicating stator bearing failure.

just replaced a faulty torque converter, changed fluid, adjusted bands. Worked fine on test drives, but now lost 3rd gear and then 2nd. I put 11 qts ATF+4 in to get to correct dipstick reading, but now reads high. Not foamy. Would that cause shifting issue? What is correct replacement capacity?

How ,much over the full mark is it? A little bit isn't going to do anything, but if it is alot over the full mark it could.

about 1/4 inch over, probably 1 qt or less.

OK, that's not enough to do anything.

If this issue wasn't there before then I would be looking at your band adjustment. what procedure did you use........EXACTLY?

front band tighten to 72in lb, back off 2 7/8 turns, tighten lock nut. Rear band 72 in lb, back off 2 turns. Spec per Haynes.

OK, so your specs are correct, and if done correctly then the adjustment shouldn't be an issue. Have you dropped the pan again just to verify everything looks normal, and the filter is properly seated.? If you haven't you might want to at this point?

If you have lost gears, you should also be setting fault codes............can you post those as well.

No fault codes present. Will drop pan tomorrow, redo adjustment procedure. Anything else to pay particular attention to while the pan is off?

FYI... limping home it seemed to occasionally make the jump to 2nd and maybe 3rd, so not gone completely.

If you only dropped the pan in the beginning to change fluid and adjust the bands there isn't too much to go wrong aside from the adjustment itself and the filter seal. Make sure the old seal is not still there and that the new filter is properly seated and sealed.

i dropped the pan because I replaced the faulty torque converter, and wanted to remove any contaminants. I did the band adjust as 50k mile preventative maintenance. Now wish I had not.old filter seal definitely came off with old filter.

Ok, I’m on tomorrow so let me know after you’ve double checked things. Silly question maybe but did you install new or used converter and any chance it may not be the right one?
