Customer Question
2007 Dodge Ram 1500...

2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck no electrical- ignition or headlights, 16 volts across battery, replaced ignition switch & starter nothing

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? Have you checked the bulbs?

Yes all fuses goos and headlights good

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Ram 1500 yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes, when I had electrical (off and on) I had clicks on starter but no turn over so I check voltage across solenoid when turn on and had it so I took off starter and bench tested and it was weak and heating up fast so I replaced. It clicked once and all electrical went out again. replaced ignition swithch today

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

This happened a while back and the key cylinder was replaced and got better but when it started again the vehicle set for many months.

you have an overvoltage. nothing is going to work

Do I change the battery? It did work when the battery was down to 2 volts
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Even when I had the battery charged up to 11 volts the circuits had a charge and bells & light were working but starter circuit was just a click
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
This is why I had it on a jumper to make sure I had the cold cranking amps and measured the voltage to 16v while jumping which did still click yesterday but today nothing at all.

a fully charged battery should read 12.5vdc with the engine off. it should read between 14.0-14.4vdc with the engine running

Great comment but why am I not getting any voltage to the ignition or lights. I can't find the wire diagrams to help troubleshoot. I have wiggled all wiring inside and out to see if I can find a short but no luck. While I can adjust my jumper to give me the 12.5 volts it still doesn't give me any life to the system, no lights no ignition.

I have already tested voltage to the starter and I have it but with the exception of the fuseable link this diagram doesn't show me anything else for me to test to see between where is the break.
Dodge Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 8 months ago

I have a broken wire to #1 plug/coil but this existed before all this but I will need to repair once I get the engine cranking unless there is some sort of senor
This diagram helps a little. I will test these lines tomorrow and get back, Thanks
Dodge Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 8 months ago
