2005 Ram 3500 Diesel. Shuts off for a second and restarts.

Customer Question

2005 Ram 3500 Diesel. Shuts off for a second and restarts. Temp gauge also resets when this happens. Started couple of months ago twice after pulling a trailer 6 hours. Yesterday happened 16 times in a 3 mile stretch after running a 30 minute chore
JA: How old is the engine? And when was it last serviced?
Customer: Original 2005 Reg service re: all filters once a yr. no other deervice to speak of
JA: What is the make/model of your car?
Customer: Dodge-Ram-2005, 3500 DRW diesel
JA: Are you fixing your 3500 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Tried nothing yet. Problem was so intermit ant. Only code thrown was a 2509 or something like that which indicated a ground issue
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I think that will do it

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

P2509 sets when there is a loss of battery voltage to the engine controller and may be related to the issue you're having. The engine controller is going down and coming back to life, which is either a loss of power or ground, an internal failure or a short to power or ground on a handful of sensor circuits.

Was the code not setting when the problem was not present but is setting consistently now?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
the code has been stored since the issue started there is no check engine light or other warning lights on either. there is a bulb out light on we have checked the grounding points and removed and cleaned them the put it back together and it is still happening we have also checked the batteries and alternator all check out fine

If you clear the code does it set again with no symptoms or does it only set when the problem happens?
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
we have never tried to clear the code so i cant really give you an answer as far as that goes
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Batteries disconnected now. Will reconnect and check for codes via radio. Will have code reader later this afternoon as well
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 8 months ago.
The code will need to be cleared with a code reader or scan tool after the batteries are connected.

Will make a point of driving vehicle as much as possible. the freeze frame data that was stored before the code was cleared is as follows calc load 0.0% ect 203 f map (inhg) 38.7 eng rpm 2099 vec speed 11mph iat 111.2 f tps 28.2% fuel press 26109.6 psi fuel level 17% baro(inhg) 28.9 ecu volt 13.4 ambient temp 95 f read with inova 3100 abs scan tool

Hopefully you'll be able to get it to act up and if so then check for codes as soon as you're able to and see if the P2509 has set again.
