Customer Question

I have a 1999 Dodge Caravan V6 3.3 and I have a code P1698, I replaced the instrument panel on the PCM computer and nothing changed, and the instrument panel is not functioning, I did install it and also reset the dash to turn it back on or something like that and I was wondering if someone can help me get to the bottom of this?

Was this a new cluster that you replace?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
No it's not new just the thing is it was working and it just turned off for no apparent reason
Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Have you done this type of stuff before?
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

The common cause for the code P1698 to set is usually a failing Instrument cluster. Are you able to do some testing with your replacement cluster?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Just when i replaced the cluster it was working just fine and for some odd reason it just stopped working
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

Are you able to check the circuit if I provide the steps to do so?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
This is the problem for the car right?
Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Because i have the check engine light on
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

Yes I am referring to the test steps for the cluster which can set the code P1698 which will also tun on the check engine light.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
What do you recommend I do?
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

I recommend you run the test steps to check your used cluster and its circuit. See the steps in the link below to do this.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
If i replace the old cluster with a new one, will the check engine light go off?
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

In most cases yes it will but I would sure run the test steps I sent you first to make sure the circuit to it is okay. If the circuit checks okay then replacing the cluster should solve this code.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
How do I test them?
Expert:  Ron replied 10 months ago.

By following the test steps I just sent you.
