2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 5.9 Transmission stopped working

Customer Question

2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 5.9
Transmission stopped working in reverse, when put into drive it works normal. Today put into drive to move it and it didn't engage, placed in park, back into drive and worked fine. Not sure where to start in repairing issue.

Hello and welcome to just answer. Have you checked the transmission fluid level yet?

I have, it's correct.

Ok, then the problem may be with the valve body (manual shift valve), or something more serious like a torn clutch pack piston seal, or broken planetary gear set. tell me when in drive does it shift through all of the gears?

Chris

It does shift through all gears.

Ok, I found a Chrysler Star case that discusses this problem of no reverse. It appears as though there can be an issue with the rear clutch pack. The transmission will most likely need to be pulled and opened up to check this. (sorry). I copied and pasted it for you to read:

RecommendationInspect all rear clutch pack components. Transmission binds-up in reverse or will not engage reverse gear. Vehicle may creep forward when the engine is revved with transmission in neutral. Rear clutch element is normally engaged in all forward gears and must be off in neutral and reverse. Rear clutch element may be seized or engaged at all times. Inspect rear clutch pack. Repair as necessary. Suggest check all clutch and band elements with low shop air pressure after repairs are completed. Valve body must be off transmission case. See transmission case air pressure check port location diagram in applicable service manual. Rear clutch pack (forward gear) must not apply when front clutch pack (reverse gear) is applied. Most service manuals are available on MDS2 machine.
