1994 Dakota 318 stalls when put in gear and wont restart right away
JA: How old is the transmission? Have you checked the brake switch?
Customer: trans is original as far as I know and I haven't checked the brake switch
JA: Are you fixing your Dakota yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: diferent coil and pick up coil no codes when I do the key thing
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

There are many things that can cause the engine to die but if it dies immediately and only when put into gear and there are no codes setting then I would first suspect the torque converter clutch is staying on. This will give the same feel as if you let out on the clutch with a manual transmission without letting off the brake. Would that be a good description of what you're feeling?

but it has got progressively worse to the point of not starting until the next day. Would this be an effect of that

The engine no starting couldn't be caused by the converter.
