Customer Question

Can the oil pump itself fluctuate between zero pressure and full?
JA: When was your last oil change?
Customer: 2,000 miles full synthetic
JA: What is the model/year of your Dodge?
Customer: 1998 2500 V10 with 180,000 miles
JA: Are you fixing your 2500 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Not fixing it myself. A mechanic replaced the oil pressure switch.(sending unit from the engine)
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I need to decide whether I'm getting a false signal, or summarily replace the oil pump.

yes a defective or bad oil pump can cause that type of fluctuation in oil pressure

with a new oil pressure switch the shop needs to remove the switch and screw in a mechanical oil pressure gauge if the mechanical gauge shows the fluctuation then replacing the oil pump will correct that problem

if the mechanical gauge does NOT show the fluctuation then the swtich is wrong or defective or the wiring to the switch is bad or even the switch connector or terminals is bad
