I need to adjust the park brake cable tension on a 1997

Customer Question

I need to adjust the park brake cable tension on a 1997 Dodge Intrepid with rear drum brakes. I replaced the shoes and drums. The brakes work fine when the pedal is depressed however the park brake will not engage enough to hold. I think the cables are stretched.
JA: How many miles are on the car? Are these the orignial brakes?
Customer: 137k miles. I just replaced the shoes and drums.
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I adjusted the shoes and they are properly working when the brake pedal is depressed. The car tracks straight in a hard braking situation. It is just the park brake that will not properly engage.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: The park brake sector or park brake cables seem to be the only issue.

sorry man, got side tracked.

Expert:  david craig replied 11 months ago.

the cables come together at points 8 and 14 and there should be an adjustment nut to be able to tighten the 2 cables running to the back

8 & 14? The equalizer is under the center console. The two rear cables exit the cabin through the floor individually. Is the cable adjustment inside the cabin?

David,Are you available? It is getting late.

sorry, a little family mishap last night. all is good this morning. the cable adjustment should be underneath the vehicle. vehicles with handbrake levers, have the adjustment inside the vehicle under the center console

David,I had to move on. I finished the project without your assistance.I do not believe I should be charged for your time as your assistance did not help resolve the issue.Earl Lindeman
