I hooked up an external regulator. Worked fine. When I went to secure the old alternator wires I touched them on metal. Car died. Turns over won't fire. Checked all under the dash fuses. Nothing major there. No spark to coil

Been a long time since working on this model but do know, you likely blew a fuse link. Fuse links are short pieces of soft wire, different colors, most all grouped together, They are designed to pop if a short, Like a fuse but they burn in 1/2 , well most times , some just burn inside the rubber, Hard to explain but need to locate all the group of fuse links wires behind the battery, Soft pieces of wire , different colors,When you locate this small bundle of fuse links, grab hold of each end of a link and pull, if it stretches it is bad, Do this for all fuse links, Look close for any burned in 1/2, You can buy fuse links and splice one in from most any parts store

near 100% you have blown fuse link, you have lost main power to fuse box or ign switch, I just wish a picture existed of the links I include some pics of what fuse links look like. most are different colors
