Dakota: What are the sensors on 1997 & 98 Dakota transmission.

Customer Question

What are the sensors on 1997 & 98 Dakota transmission. Preferably the one next to the drive shaft seal. 97 has an extra sensor. Can I swap 97 in to 98? Meaning 98 has no connection for the extra sensor.

Both are 3.9 v6. 98 I believe to never have a/c. Both 97 & 98 have over drive button on shift lever.

I see that 1997 models only, have vehicle speed sensor on tranny. Where is vss on 98? If I don't connect vss up on 97 tranny in the 98 will drivability still be smooth?
Expert:  -Brad- replied 2 years ago.
The screw in sensor on the tailshaft is the output sensor and if the other transmission doesn't have one then they will not interchange and work properly..

Are the torque converters interchangeable?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
How does the 98 truck get the output sensor when there's none on the tranny?
Expert:  -Brad- replied 2 years ago.
Do you have the VIN number for each vehicle so I can see exactly what transmissions you have?

98- 1b7fL26x9Ws756036
97- 1b7FL26X5vs262173

Both show a 42RE but they are different from 1997-1998
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So the torque converters are not interchangeable?
Expert:  -Brad- replied 2 years ago.
Yes the converters will interchange..

Would any of Durango trannys fit in 98 dakota?
Expert:  -Brad- replied 2 years ago.
The transmission in the 1998 will only fit a 1998 Dakota and 1998 Ram with 3.9.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Doesn't the 98 look for the output signal somewhere else? Could I install the tranny with the sensor just not hook it up, since the truck isnt looking for the signal there anyway?
Expert:  -Brad- replied 2 years ago.
You can try but it's likely not going to shift correctly..
