Dodge Sprinter: , we have a Dodge Sprinter diesel work van

Customer Question

Hi, we have a Dodge Sprinter diesel work van that has accidentently (!) had regular gas put in it. It was driven two blocks before the driver realized his mistake. We, of course, are trying to minimize the damage and hoping for the best. Wondering what we can do at this point!

Hi Welcome to Just Answer! You will need to drain the fuel tank and also change the fuel filter and try to flush out the lines from the tank to the filter you can use either diesel fuel or transmission fluid to flush the lines. Then refill the tank with diesel fuel

We have no mechanic experience… is this something we can try ourselves or take to a reliable local mechanic, which we are good with, we really just wanted to know what we are looking at and what realistic expectations are. How would we know if the work is successful. Will it run smoothly immediately? Do we need to use any kind of additional additive? ThanksCustomer

Best thing to do is take it to a mechanic i would have it towed and not drive it or start it if possible

That was our plan… tow for sure. So, hopefully, all is not lost? One mechanic was telling us it is a total loss… we will need a new engine… aaaaahhhhh!!!

Did the engine shut off by itself or did you turn it off? They don't recommend using any fuel additives on that engine And it may run rough for a few minutes but should clear up and run ok after a few miles if everything is ok

The driver turned it off after two blocks.

Ok you should be ok I just had one this week that had gas put in it and it had shut off and i was able to flush everything out and change the filter and it has been running fine
