Hi,
I have a 05 Durango 5.7 just recently the service 4wd light is coming on and off and the 4 wd is ingaging on it's own. Is this a common failure?
Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

This isn't an unheard of problem. It could be a problem with the switch, wiring, or front control module (FCM), but it is usually caused by a bad transfer case shift motor. The motor contains an internal position sensor and it can sometimes report an incorrect position making the FCM think the transfer case is in a position that it isn't, so it then tries to complete a shift and it can go into four wheel drive or neutral on it's own.

Most likely the shift motor will need to be replaced. It's mounted on the left side of the transfer case and takes about an hour to replace.

Is this a pull and replace part or will it need to be calibrated in any way?
No calibration is needed. You can remove it and install the new one and nothing else needs to be done except for clear fault codes, which can be done by disconnecting the battery if needed.
