My daughter (5) gets red inflamed areas on her buttocks and now on the back of her leg and on her shoulder area. Her pediatrician gave steroid lotion and she says it burns. We have tried other lotions but nothing helps. I have pictures I can show you.

Doctor's Assistant: What are your daughter's symptoms? Has she used any medication for this?

Red, painful inflamed areas. Extra moisturizer lotion and steroid lotions have not helped. I

Doctor's Assistant: Has she seen a dermatologist about the redness?

No just her pediatrician

Hello my name is***** am a board-certified pediatrician with over 15 years of clinical experience and I am happy to help you. Can you tell me which lotions exactly you have tried so far? And do you have the name of the steroid your pediatrician prescribed? Was that steroid a lotion, cream or ointment? Finally, can you please attach some pictures to this chat thread for me to review? Thank you.

The lotion was just an extra moisturizerizing. Not sure he name. Then ammonium lactate 12% lotion.

Thank you for that information and the picture. From what I can see, there does seem to be some sort of dermatitis or skin inflammation going on. It appears to be dry, somewhat raised up and rough in texture. It does not appear to be infected with bacteria or fungus. Ammonium lactate can definitely cause a stinging/burning sensation and many children do not tolerate it well. Here's what I would recommend:

1. First and foremost, dermatitis skin conditions tend to respond to frequent moisturization. Better than lotions and creams are thicker, more viscous emollients. Aquaphor (small white plastic tub with a blue cap) is my professional as well as personal favorite. I would apply it liberally, multiple times, at least 4-5x per day for several weeks.

2. A mild, over the counter steroid ointment that doesn't burn or sting can hasten resolution of inflammation. Use hydrocortisone 1% ointment (not cream) 3x per day for 2 weeks. Apply this at separate times than the Aquaphor, to be sure the skin soaks in the medication.

If these measures don't provide significant improvement, then I would suggest seeing a dermatologist for an in person evaluation.

Can I help with anything else today?
