My husband's fingernails appear to be lifting. It it

Customer Question

My husband's fingernails appear to be lifting. It it happening on at least 3 of his nails. The white on the end of the nail is getting bigger. Is this a result of his recent diabetes diagnosis? What can we do?

Hello this is Dr. Salama MD,

This is not a typical effect of uncontrolled diabetes.

However, diabetes can make someone more prone to infections especially fungal ones.

Fungal nail infections are quite common and can be treated with oral medication taken for a few months.

Before the treatment, his doctor would need to check his liver function to make sure it's within normal limits.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

If not, please don't forget to leave a positive rating as that's the only way I get credit for answering your question.

Thank you!

This is called oncholysis and can be from several reasons.

We typically would not start with a few months or oral medication.

There are better topicals now days.

And the sugars need to be corrected.

I can look at a picture if you attach it here.
