Hello from JustAnswer.
The most common cause of bruising is from trauma, and many times, people do not recall the trauma.
When there is bruising that is unrelated to trauma, there are two major issues, either a low level of platelets or a low level of proteins that form clots. There are many reasons to have low platelets or proteins, such as autoimmune disease or chronic liver disease.
The first step would be checking a blood count that includes a platelet count and blood tests that measure clotting time of the blood, called a prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time, or PT and PTT respectively.
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
